How to Handle Your Pet’s Animal Bite Injuries

You want your pet to stay safe, but accidents can happen. When your pet is bitten by another animal, you may feel overwhelmed and unsure of what to do. It’s important to remain calm and take the necessary steps to care for your pet.

Consult a Veterinarian

If your pet has received an animal bite, you should take them to the emergency animal hospital immediately. Animal bites can cause serious infections, and your pet may need antibiotics or other treatments. An emergency veterinarian will be able to assess the severity of the wound and make sure that your pet is properly cared for.

Don’t Try to Treat the Wound Yourself

While you may be tempted to clean your pet’s wound yourself, it’s best to leave it to the professionals. Your veterinarian will know how to properly clean and dress a wound, as well as give your pet any necessary medications. Without knowledge of the animal that bit your pet, it’s difficult to assess any potential infections that may have been transmitted. If you must dab at the wound before taking your pet to the veterinarian, wash your hands thoroughly or wear gloves.

Vaccinate Your Pet

If you haven’t already, get your pet vaccinated against rabies. Rabies is a virus that can be passed from animal to animal through bites or saliva exchange. Depending on your pet’s age and health status, your veterinarian will be able to determine whether or not a rabies vaccine is necessary.

Follow Up with At-Home Care

Once you have taken your pet to their veterinarian, they may need additional at-home care. Depending on the severity of the bite, your pet may need to have the wound cleaned and dressed daily or have medications administered. Be sure to follow your veterinarian’s instructions and keep an eye on your pet for any signs of infection, such as swelling or discharge.

It can be a stressful experience when your pet is bitten by another animal. However, if you remain calm and take the necessary steps, you can help ensure that your pet recovers and is back to their normal self in no time.
