Three Tips to Protect Your Pet This Holiday Season

Before the parties begin and the feasts hit the table, the first step towards holiday cheer begins with Christmas decorations. While these additions are a human favorite, they can pose significant health and safety risks to our pets. However, there are ways to make your home pet-safe without compromising on your holiday decorations, and we’re here to show you how!

Secure Electric Christmas Lights

Christmas lights are an excellent way to brighten up your home, both inside and out. However, dangling cords can be appealing to pets, who may swat or pull on them. Additionally, when pets come in contact with electric holiday lights, they often chew the cords. This can be highly hazardous and lead to burns or even electrocution. Be sure that your pet is never left alone with these holiday items and that cords are safely tucked away to avoid the risk of accidents and injuries.

Put Up a Pet-Safe Christmas Tree

Christmas trees are perhaps the most anticipated part of holiday decor. Unfortunately, without proper preparation, trees can be very dangerous to your pet. Pets are drawn to these fixtures and often jump or climb on them, leading to the tree toppling over. This can result in your pet being injured and at the very least a huge, unpleasant mess. To avoid this issue, secure your Christmas tree to the ceiling or door frame using a fishing line to fasten it in place.

Be Careful with Seasonal Flowers and Plants

Seasonal flowers and festive plants including poinsettias, mistletoe, balsam, and more are holiday staples that bring festive cheer to your home. However, they are not safe for your four-legged companion. If these plants are ingested by your pet, your pet can become very ill as they are poisonous to animals. If you include these additions in your holiday decor, be sure to keep them in a secure area far out of your pet’s reach, or consider artificial alternatives.

If your pet suffers an accident this holiday season, contact your nearest emergency veterinarian right away.
